Sven Martson

Born in Germany and raised in the United States, Sven Martson received his BA from Syracuse University in 1970. Subsequent studies led to an interest in documentary style photography. In 1972 he met Walker Evans and worked under his direction, making prints from Evans’ negatives. After Evans’ death, Martson continued to print for the Evans’ estate.

As an established freelance photographer, he serves a wide range of independent educational institutions throughout the northeast United States.

Over the past thirty years he has traveled extensively, producing an impressive body of personal work. He has exhibited in the United States and Europe. His work appears in a wide variety of publications.

Recently his increasing interest in digital imaging has led to extensive exploration of multitone pigment printing. Together with John T. Hill he formed Martson Hill Editions to produce photographic works using this technology.

John T. Hill

Hill studied painting and design before coming to photography in 1958. After completing graduate studies in design and photography at the Yale University School of Art and Architecture in 1961, he was invited to join that faculty. He became a friend and colleague of Walker Evans, a fellow faculty member. Hill served as Director of Graduate Studies in Photography from 1972 until 1978. He led various design and photography workshops until early 1990.

Coincidental with his teaching, Hill pursued an active career as photographer and designer. He continues to work in these fields.

In 1972 Walker Evans named Hill as executor of his estate. From Evans’ death in early 1975 until 1994 Hill served in that role. As executor he produced four books and several exhibitions on Evans’ work. His work with MHE is a continuing appreciation of Evans’ contribution to twentieth century art.
