In 2001 Sven Martson and John T. Hill first discussed using digital technology to interpret one of Walker Evans' best known images, Alabama Cotton Tenant Farmer Wife, 1936. Both men are photographers and both had worked with Evans long enough to have a strong sense of his aesthetic.

After some months of experimentation and frustration a print was made which they felt did credit to Evans, the farmer wife, and their own sensibility. By 2002 they were satisfied with a dozen or more of their renderings of Evans' work. From these MHE selected five key images and published them as the portfolio, Walker Evans I.

From that beginning they have extended into other areas. They now work with a range of contemporary artists, continue to explore historical material and apply the same technology in producing their own work.
